Collins reached out to Nick Young, a five-year veteran who, for his career, has averaged 11.4 points, shooting 43 percent from the floor, 38 percent from three-point range. Like Williams, Young was a free agent.
Collins and Young hit it off instantly, and a deal followed.
“I was shocked. I didn’t see this being one of the places I was going to come to,” Young said Wednesday afternoon. “Doug called me early, 6 a.m. L.A. time, and we were just talking and it was a great talk. He had a good spirit to him. He talked to my dad and my mom and once my mom started raving about him that was pretty much it.”
Young signed a one-year contract. He was the first new face to join the Sixers this offseason. He had no idea the acquisition of an All-Star center would follow, but he is thrilled it did.
“It’s unbelievable, really,” Young said of the Andrew Bynum addition. “That’s big to get a player like that. It makes us work harder because we know we are going to be a target. We have big goals coming in. People say I made a mistake leaving L.A. but it’s like I brought L.A. with me.”
