BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana used a national television audience and a raucous crowd at Assembly Hall Tuesday night to make a lasting impression on the college basketball world.
If you didn’t think the Hoosiers were deserving of their No. 1 national ranking before there can be no doubt now. Indiana used a 22-3 run to open the second half and never looked back as the Hoosiers pounded No. 13 North Carolina 83-59.
It was IU’s second win in a row in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and cemented Indiana’s position atop the national rankings.
Cody Zeller had 20 points and eight rebounds while Victor Oladipo and Will Sheehey had 19 points each for the Hoosiers (7-0). IU is back in action Saturday at home against Coppin State.
Exactly one week after Butler had handed North Carolina its first loss of the season in Maui with an 82-71 victory, the Hoosiers made the Tar Heels 0-2 against the state.
Against Butler, North Carolina (5-2) trailed by as many as 29 before the Tar Heels rallied. Indiana’s biggest lead was 32 when Sheehey hit a 3-pointer from the right corner with 4:20 to play.
Jordan Hulls also had a big night for Indiana with 13 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.
IU won despite the fact that Christian Watford was held to two points. His only basket was a tomahawk jam with 4:56 to play that earned a long ovation.
Dexter Strickland led North Carolina with 14 points.
