Michigan State overtakes Iowa

IOWA CITY, Ia. – The final 64 seconds were unkind to Iowa’s basketball team Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
No. 18 Michigan State rallied from a three-point deficit to beat the Hawkeyes, 62-59. The Spartans got the lead when Branden Dawson picked off Mike Gesell’s pass intended for Zach McCabe and dunked it for a 58-56 lead with 48 seconds to play.
Iowa freshman Anthony Clemmons, who is from Lansing, Mich., had a chance to tie the game with :12 remaining but missed the second of two free throws. The Spartans’ Keith Appling made a pair of free throws with :08 remaining to set the final score.
Dawson scored 17 for Michigan State, now 13-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten. Zach McCabe led Iowa, 11-5 and 0-3, with 15 points.
Iowa was playing without leading scorer Devyn Marble, who sprained his right ankle in practice Monday.Marble, a junior averaging 15.5 points a game, was on the sidelines for the first time in his 82-game career.
Senior Eric May replaced Marble in the starting lineup. May made his 70th career start, but first since Jan. 26, 2012 against Nebraska.
Iowa scored the first seven points of the game and built its lead to a dozen, at 26-14, with 8 minutes 24 seconds remaining in the half. But the Hawkeyes would score just two more points in the half, an Aaron White dunk that ended a scoreless drought of 6:43. That was Iowa’s only points in its last 15 possessions of the opening half.
Iowa built its lead back up as many as eight in the second half, the last at 38-30 on Mike Gesell ‘s drive with 12:52 remaining.
But Michigan State scored on three consecutive possessions, two of them after Iowa turnovers, to take its first lead of the, 43-42, on Keith Appling’s fast-break layup with just under 9 minutes to play. Gary Harris made it scores on four straight possessions with a 3-pointer.
Iowa tied the game at 48-48 on Melsahn Basabe’s conventional three-point play, then regained the eld on McCabe’s 3-pointer at the 4:27 mark, 51-49, with a Derrick Nix free throw sandwiched in … [For more on No. 18 Michigan State overtakes Iowa in final minute, click here.]
