BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – First, Indiana played the perfect half of basketball against Minnesota.
And then the Hoosiers had to do everything possible to hang on in the second.
Indiana built up a 23-point halftime advantage and then survived a furious Minnesota rally to beat the Golden Gophers 88-81 Saturday before a capacity crowd at Assembly Hall.
Jordan Hulls hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining and Christian Watford added two more with 3.5 seconds to play.
Victor Oladipo scored 20 points, Hulls had 19 and Cody Zeller had 18 as the No. 5 Hoosiers defeated No. 8 Minnesota. It was the first time two top 10 ranked teams had played at Assembly Hall since 2000.
IU (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) could do nothing wrong in the first half. The Hoosiers shot 65.6 percent from the field, hit 7-of-11 3-pointers and forced 12 Minnesota turnovers. The Hoosiers led 52-29 at the break.
But the Golden Gophers (15-2, 3-1) hit shot after shot in the second half, forced numerous turnovers and took advantage of poor IU foul shooting. IU missed 14 free throws in 40 attempts. Thirteen of those misses came in the second half.
IU committed 11 second-half turnovers.
Andre Hollins led the Gophers with 25 points.
