MINNEAPOLIS – Regardless what they said before, the Michigan Wolverines came to Minnesota needing a statement.
Slamming history, No. 5 U-M left with possibly the Big Ten’s best conference win this season, handling No. 12 Minnesota 83-75, by controlling the game at Williams Arena.
The whipping snapped a drought as U-M’s last road win over any team ranked above 25 came in 2005.
U-M was led by Tim Hardaway Jr.’s 21 points and Trey Burke’s 18.
The Wolverines (17-1, 4-1 Big Ten) stretched the lead after halftime with strong defense, allowing only two Minnesota baskets in the first seven minutes after the break. But the Gophers (15-3, 3-2) made a late second half run to get within seven late as U-M went most of the final six minutes without a field goal, sealing it with free throws.
Michigan took control with a 36-30 lead at the half as their stars opened much better than at Ohio State, combining for 27 points, led by Hardaway 17.
The half was played at Michigan’s pace, in transition, as the Wolverines forced 10 turnovers, scoring 22 points off them, compared to just three for the Gophers.
