North Carolina was a near unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in the Associated Press preseason college basketball poll released Friday.

The Tar Heels are the preseason No. 1 for the eighth time since the poll originated in 1961, tying UCLA for the most in history.

With all five starters returning, North Carolina received 62 first-place votes from a 65-member media panel. The Tar Heels also topped the coaches’ poll released earlier this month.

Kentucky was second despite receiving no first-place votes. Ohio State was third with one first-place vote and defending champion Connecticut fourth, snaring the other two.

The rest of the top 10 was Syracuse, Duke, Vanderbilt, Florida, Louisville and Pittsburgh.
