Officials stand by flagrant calls

Sixteen teams remain in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, but there is another number many coaches are watching: 8.
That’s the number of flagrant fouls called – plus four situations that were reviewed but not called – in the tournament’s first 20 games. Not all of those involved swinging elbows, but enough did to prompt outrage about the rule itself.
“Coaches need to make a big stink about it,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. “We need to get rid of the rule. Just get back to trusting that an official can look at an elbow and see that it’s intentional and meant to hard, and that should be two shots and the ball; and if it’s really, really bad, then kick the kid out.
But you can’t play basketball without touching somebody in the face once in a while – inadvertently – and I don’t think you should be punished for that.”
The rule states: A flagrant 1 personal foul shall be a personal foul that is deemed excessive in nature and/or unnecessary, but not based solely on the severity of the act. Examples include, but are not limited to:
According to the NCAA rulebook, “there can be incidental contact with the elbow above or below the shoulders; swinging of the elbow is required for the foul to be classified as a flagrant 1 or 2 foul.” A flagrant 1 foul results in two free throws and the ball awarded to the offended team. Flagrant 2 fouls are more serious and violent and result in automatic rejection from the game.
NCAA coordinator of officials John Adams said an increased concern about the risks of concussions and violent contact was what prompted the rule three years ago. He said, despite the outcry from coaches, he didn’t think there was an “inordinate number” of flagrant 1 fouls called this weekend.
