BLOOMINGTON, IND. — No. 13 Ohio State put a damper on No. 2 Indiana’s senior night Tuesday, beating the Hoosiers 67-58 and keeping them from clinching the Big Ten title outright.
Deshaun Thomas had 18 points and Aaron Craft added 15 for the Buckeyes.
IU (25-5, 13-4) can still win the title outright, but will have to do it by defeating Michigan on Sunday in Ann Arbor. Also at stake may be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional, which stages its semifinals and finals at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Ohio State (22-7, 12-5) won made because of a rugged defense that slowed IU’s transition game. Neither team led by more than five until Ohio State went on a 25-11 run over an 11-minute stretch in the second half.
But Ohio State took the lead for good when Evan Ravenel’s basket made the score 44-43 with 12:03 left. Lenzelle Smith Jr.’s dunk with 3:17 left stretched the lead to 61-50. IU could get no closer than six points after that.
Foul trouble hindered IU in the first half. Victor Oladipo picked up his second foul with 11:06 left and didn’t play again before halftime. Cody Zeller picked up his second foul on a charging call with 5:47 left. He also didn’t play again until the second half.
Despite the windy and snowy conditions outside, IU fans were not about to miss the final home game for seniors Christian Watford, Jordan Hulls and Derek Elston. Assembly Hall was packed and raucous until Ohio State took control late.
