Eric Gordon may be on the move. New Orleans Pelicans general managerDell Demps told WWLTV that he could not promise the guard would be back with the team next season.
“To say if I anticipate [Gordon] being back — I don’t know if that’s something I can answer right now, or him not to be back. We’re going to sit down and evaluate every situation and opportunity,” Demps said Monday.
Gordon was traded to the then-Hornets in December of 2011 as part of the blockbuster deal that sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers, and played in just nine games in his first season in New Orleans. He signed a four-year, $58 million offer sheet with the Phoenix Suns in the summer of 2012, and very publicly stated that he didn’t want New Orleans to match it. They ultimately retained him, and he appeared in 42 games this season as he continued to struggle with a knee injury.
He did lead the Hornets last season with 17.0 points a game, but that came on 40.2% shooting and was down from 22.0 points a game on 45.0% shooting over the previous two seasons.
Gordon’s health and contract may make it difficult for the Pelicans to move him for equal value. However, even if they are unable to find a buyer, they figure to have as much as $16 million in cap space this summer.
