Pitino compares FT shooting to Shaq, Dwight

Remember when Louisville was No. 1?
The No. 5 Cardinals have now lost two consecutive games and now left us questioning if they’re even worthy of being ranked in the top 10.
The always-candid Rick Pitino pointed blame to the refs after Saturday’s close 70-68 loss to Syracuse. On Tuesday night, he lit off on his team, which shot 12-for-24 from the free-throw line in its disastrous loss 73-64 to Villanova last night.
Pitino, who coached the Celtics from 1997-2001, ripped his team with a brilliant comparison to one of the NBA’s worst free-throw shooters of all-time and one of the worst free-throw shooters in the game today.
Cue Pitino’s news conference venting:
“It was really a simple answer to why we lost. Basically we were Dwight Howard or Shaquille O’Neal. We came down, had a six-point lead and it could have been eight, could have kept coming down and extending it but our free throws were a turnover. Very simple answer for why we lost. Our foul shooting was despicable.”
Lucky for Pitino and Louisville, it’s still January and March is when the Cardinals will need to be on their A-game and shoot less despicably. Last season Louisville made the Final Four despite playing shaky (losing to South Florida). And let’s remember, this team hasn’t been proven invulnerable by any stretch of the imagination, barely escaping mid-majors Northern Iowa and Illinois State in the non-conference season.… [For more on Pitino compares Louisville free-throw shooting to Shaq, Dwight Howard, click here.]
