SALT LAKE CITY — Pittsburgh’s Lamar Patterson tried to plead his case to the referees throughout a late first-half timeout, but his begging was of no use.

Patterson was called for a flagrant offensive foul after referees determined he used his elbow to clear out space while dribbling toward the basket. Patterson’s high left elbow hit Wichita State’s Ron Baker in the face.

Baker made 1-of-2 free throws following the foul, part of a 5-0 run by the Shockers to end the first half with a 26-21 lead against Pittsburgh.

CBS analyst Doug Gottlieb, calling the game at EnergySolutions Arena, disagreed with the call, and the controversial call was the focus of discussion during halftime.
