As Glenn Robinson III rose up the recruiting rankings in his final two years of high school, becoming Rivals’ No. 11 player in the 2012 class, Purdue coach Matt Painter could only watch.

Robinson was committed to Michigan from the summer after his sophomore year and never wavered.

His father was an All-American at Purdue and the No. 1 overall pick in the 1994 NBA draft, but Painter couldn’t find a place for the younger Robinson.

“We recruited him, and we actually ran out of scholarships,” Painter said on a Monday teleconference before the Boilermakers face U-M on Thursday. “We really liked him, and he was a good player. He really made strides from that sophomore to that junior year. Now going to Michigan in their system, he definitely fit. He’s a great kid. He’s really worked hard. He has a good feel and knows how to play.

“I obviously played college basketball with his dad (in 1992-93), but it never really matriculated to that point.”
