Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo has been suspended two games for his part in a ruckus between the Celtics and Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night, the NBA announced Thursday.
He was the only player suspended, though the NBA fined Nets forward Gerald Wallace $35,000 and Celtics forward-center Kevin Garnett $25,000 for their roles in the incident — both of whom were cited by the league for “escalating the altercation.”
Nets forward Kris Humphries was not penalized.
After Humphries’ hard foul on Garnett late in the second quarter, Rondo shoved Humphries and the altercation extended out of bounds near the front row seats on the baseline. Garnett and Wallace were also involved in a brief altercation. Officiating crew chief James Capers told a pool reporter the referees’ video review revealed that no punches were thrown by Wallace and Garnett.
Rondo, Humphries and Wallace were ejected.
“Rondo initiated everything that proceeded after the foul,” Capers told the pool reporter.
Rondo’s streak of 37 consecutive games with at least 10 assists ended with the ejection, falling short of Magic Johnson’s record of 46. Rondo will miss Friday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers and Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks in Milwaukee.
