Report: NBPA huddling to determine next move
The executive committee of the embattled National Basketball Players’ Association is reportedly set to meet Thursday to figure out its next course of action.Sources close to the situation say the NBPA’s major players, including executive director Billy Hunter and president Derek Fisher, will convene to discuss how to proceed in its ongoing labor battle with NBA owners.News of the meeting comes after the NBPA found itself in full-on damage control following a report that Hunter has questioned Fisher’s relationship with NBA commissioner David Stern. An irate Fisher immediately sought legal counsel and demanded a retraction Tuesday night, denying all allegations of impropriety and calling the report “inexcusable.”Negotiations between the league and the union have broken off with the sides still well apart on key issues, including the split of basketball-related income. The players are looking for something in the range of 52.5 percent, while the owners say the won’t go above a 50/50 split. The league has already postponed the first month of games, with more cancellations expected in the coming weeks.
