University of North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams had surgery Wednesday morning to have a tumor removed from his kidney, according to multiple reports.
The Raleigh News and Observerand WRAL radio in Raleigh, N.C., both reported the news around noon Wednesday, and both reported that they expected more news about the surgery to surface Wednesday afternoon.
Steve Kirschner, a spokesman for the Tar Heels, told USA TODAY Sports “Coach had a medical procedure this morning,” but Kirschner said he had no further details.
WRAL pointed out that Williams, 62, has dealt with other health issues in recent years. He has had vertigo, an inner ear condition that impacts balance, since 2007, which hasn’t caused Williams to miss any games.
During nine seasons at UNC, Williams has led the Tar Heels to a 257-68 (.793) record. His UNC teams have won two national championships (2005, 2009).
The team is scheduled to begin practice for the upcoming season Oct. 12. The first official game is set for Nov. 9
