Report: Warriors close to announcing move
An announcement that the Golden State Warriors plan to move to San Francisco could come this week, according to several reports.
The team is committed to moving, ESPN.com reported, and owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber have not denied that they’re interest in relocating from Oakland.
A news conference could be held as early as Tuesday, a source indicated in a report to Fastbreak, a Warriors fan blog.
The Warriors’ current Oracle Arena lease extends through the 2016-17 season, which means the move likely wouldn’t be made until the 2017-18 season.
“We are not prepared to make any announcements at this time,: Lacob said in a statement released Sunday.
Lacob and Guber have met with San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee about building an arena at currently vacant Piers 30-32 in San Francisco near the Giants’ AT&T Park. In addition, Lee has sent the owners a letter from 11 members of the Board of Supervisors in support of the Warriors’ relocation to San Francisco.
The proposed arena site in downtown San Francisco could face some regulatory hurdles. Traffic concerns also have been voiced about the location.
Oakland Mayor Jean Quan has expressed her city’s commitment to keeping the Warriors.
