Rockets’ Budinger plays in beach volleyball tournament
With his NBA career on hold due to the lockout, Houston Rockets swingman Chase Budinger is turning his attention to a familiar sport.
Budinger is scheduled to compete this weekend at the Corona Light Wide Open beach volleyball tournament in Hermosa Beach, Calif. First prize is $11,250.
The 23-year-old Budinger is no stranger to volleyball. He won the 2006 Mizuno National Player of the Year award while attending La Costa Canyon High in San Diego County.
“Volleyball has always been a passion of mine, and it has been great to get back out on the beach and train,” Budinger said in a statement. “I’m really excited about this opportunity and I’m looking forward to seeing how my skills match up against some of the top players.”
Budinger joins Minnesota Timberwolves stud Kevin Love as notable NBA players who are testing their mettle by competing in beach volleyball.
On the basketball court, Budinger averaged 9.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists last season.
