Rutgers email outlines Hermann hiring details

Seeking to clarify inaccurate media reports, a co-chair of the Rutgers’ search committee wrote an email to the 28-person group to clarify the process. In the email, which was obtained by USA TODAY Sports, Richard Edwards acknowledges that Rutgers officials were aware of Julie Hermann’s involvement in past lawsuits before hiring her as athletic director last month.
Once Hermann, the executive associate athletic director at Louisville, was a finalist she was subject to a background check. Parker Executive Search, a firm contracted for $70,000 to guide the committee through the process, found a 1996 pregnancy discrimination lawsuit involving Hermann when she was the volleyball coach at Tennessee as well as a 2008 wrongful termination lawsuit at Louisville.
Ginger Hineline, a former assistant coach under Hermann, alleged that she was fired after she became pregnant. Hermann has said her firing was performance-related. Hineline won a $150,000 verdict.
“Ms. Hineline was not questioned by Parker Executive Search because they concluded that the situation had been resolved in a court of law, there was no record, Julie herself was not a named defendant, and there seemed to be no reason to interview the plaintiff in this suit from more than fifteen (sic) years ago,” Edwards wrote.
After discovering the lawsuit, Parker contacted Joan Cronan, the former women’s athletic director and Hermann’s boss at Tennessee. They discussed the lawsuit but not since-revealed allegations by Hermann’s former players that she was verbally abusive. The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., reported last month that Hermann called them “whores, alcoholics and learning disabled.”
Edwards said the search executive committee, of which there were six members including himself, was not aware of those claims.
“The reason we did not know is that it never came up in discussion with the former Athletic Director who had been Julie’s supervisor there or in discussion with Julie, nor did it come up in any of the background checks,” he wrote.
That echoed comments from another member of the search executive committee. Candace Straight told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday that the committee was unaware of abuse allegations until it was reported in the media.
