Americana music, the particular brand of song that digs deep into the roots of the American spirit, has glorified the train and the railways which crisscross this great land.

The catalogue of train songs is impressive with lyrics written and song by America’s greatest songwriters, singers and bands: Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Steve Goodman, the Grateful Dead, Doc Watson, REM, Johnny Cash, Robert Johnson, Bruce Springsteen, the Carter Family, J.J. Cale, The Band, Lightnin’ Hopkins. The list goes on.

Heck, even Ozzy Osbourne took a stab at a train song with Crazy Train. “I’m going off the rails on a crazy train.”

Few if any of those performers have sung the joys of the Sleep Train. Nonetheless, when an NBA franchise desperate for revenue streams needs cash, it will take it.

With that said, the Sacramento Kings found a new sponsor to buy the naming rights to their arena. Sleep Train Mattress Centers stepped up, and the Kings’ facility now will be called Sleep Train Arena. The team announced the multiyear deal Monday.

Let the jokes begin. Watching the Kings, who have not won more than 33.3% of their games since 2007-08, will put fans in a deep slumber. If you’re not ready for bed before the Kings play, you will be after. Someone is sleepwalking through this game. Game over, goodnight.

When cash flow is at a premium, ride the rails on the Sleep Train.
