SDSU player shares moment with FGCU
by Chris Chase, USA TODAY Sports
What’s your favorite moment from the first weekend of the NCAA tournament?
Ours was a simple moment from the aftermath of a historic game.* Two of the fiercest competitors in the tournament embraced at mid-court, the defeated player whispering words of encouragement to the tournament’s newest star.
You could have understood if San Diego State’s Jamaal Franklin wanted to get off the court as quickly as possible after his team became the first team in tournament history to lose to a No. 15 seed in the round of 32. Instead, Franklin found Sherwood Brown of Florida Gulf Coast to give his congratulations.
The players hugged for more than 10 seconds, with Franklin appearing to bark words of encouragement in Brown’s ear. They briefly separated, made eye contact and then embraced one last time. We have our guesses as to what he said — something along the lines of FGCU carrying the torch for the little guys, perhaps. I’d almost rather not know. The moment was beautiful without context.
If you didn’t see it, wait until One Shining Moment. Franklin’s sportsmanship will be a highlight of the end-of-tourney montage. Heck, if they played the song and ran that moment on a three-minute loop, the goosebumps would never go away.
