The Philadelphia 76ers have come apart since a strong November. Their home court apparently is no exception.

San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard gashed his knee open on a loose nail Monday at the Wells Fargo Center, where the Spurs beat the Sixers 90-85 to drop Philadelphia to 3-7 this month and 7-18 in December and January combined. The game was close when Leonard fell with 1 minute, 31 seconds left. He didn’t re-enter.

“I just hit the hardwood on one of those nails, really hard,” Leonard told the San Antonio Express-News. “It busted my knee wide open.

“It kind of felt funny when I tried to explode up the court when we got the ball and I tried to cut to the basket, so I had to come out and see what was wrong before I injured it worse.”

The slip came after he was crossed over by Sixers forward Evan Turner. Leonard fell on that play, then fouled Turner away from the ball to stop the clock.

The cut seems unusual because, as Sports Grid points out, most basketball courts now do not require nails and instead are bound together by metal strips. We don’t know if that’s the case for Wells Fargo Center.

Leonard was having a strong game before the injury, finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
