Spurs Re-Sign Duncan And Three Others

After a quiet start to free agency the San Antonio Spurs have come to an agreement with four free agents over the last 24 hours. Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski and Johnny Ludden report that they have re-signed shooting guard Danny Green, power forward Boris Diaw, point guard Patty Mills and most importantly franchise centerpiece Tim Duncan. They also report that they could be bringing over French guard Nando De Colo soon.
Green’s deal is worth $12 million over three years. Green had a career-year for the Spurs, averaging nine points and three rebounds. He shot 43 percent from the field and started for most of the year. His minutes dwindled as the Spurs relinquished a 2-0 series advantage over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, but the great improvements he made prior warranted a new deal.
Diaw joined the Spurs late in the year after the Charlotte Bobcats waived him. The longtime friend of Spurs point guard Tony Parker moved into the starting lineup once the playoffs started and provided great versatility in the frontcourt alongside Duncan. His play was even more impressive when you consider the little time he had to acclimate himself with a new system and teammates. His contract is worth $9 million over two years. It contains a player option for the second year.
Mills, who spent most of last year playing in China, was also a late pickup and showed some explosive scoring ability late in the regular season. He didn’t have much of an opportunity to carry that over in the playoffs with Parker playing the bulk of the minutes at point. Like Diaw, he should benefit from a full training camp with the team and give them depth behind Parker. The terms of his deal are not yet known, but it’s expected to just be slightly above the minimum.
Duncan’s contract is for three years and is expected to be in the same $36 million range that Boston Celtics power forward Kevin Garnett agreed to. Duncan looked better than he has in two years this past season. There were some who thought he could be retiring at this point, but he showed that he has plenty left in the tank. Thanks to his willingness to take nearly half of what he made last year, the Spurs remain in a position to have significant cap space next summer.
This nearly completes the Spurs’ offseason. They’ll likely fill out their roster with the aforementioned De Colo and other smaller contracts.
