Stan Van Gundy, after a flap in which he charged the NBA stepped in to prevent him from getting a job at ESPN, ends up with a last-minute TV hoops gig.

Or, at least a de facto on-air tryout. Van Gundy, brother of lead ESPN/ABC NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy, will call the NBC Sports Network cable channel’s Georgetown-Florida college basketball, which will be played Nov. 9 abroad the USS Bataan, a ship docked at Mayport Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL.

Van Gundy, who will also contribute to the newly-created syndicated NBC Sports Radio programming starting in January, told USA TODAY Sports Thursday that he hopes that game broadcast leads to more on-air TV work but nothing is definite.

Says Van Gundy, who’ll be a rookie TV analyst after 31 years of coaching: “This is the first one, we’ll see what happens after that. I’m excited to do it. We’ll see on both sides.”
