Amar’e Stoudemire had not played in an NBA game since March 7. On Wednesday, in his return to the court after knee surgery, it was easy to tell. Stoudemire looked rusty and tentative in nine minutes, scoring seven points on 3-of-8 shooting as the New York Knicks fell 82-71 to the Indiana Pacers, who took a 2-1 series lead.
Roy Hibbert led the Pacers with 24 points and 12 rebounds and was a major factor on the defensive end, but otherwise both teams struggled to create offense. The Pacers shot 35% from the field. The Knicks weren’t much better, shooting 35.2%.
Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 21 points on 6-of-16 shooting, but he was the only New York scorer to reach double figures. J.R. Smith, who was questionable before the game with a fever, had a forgettable nine points on 4-of-12 shooting in 25 minutes.
Hibbert turned in his best game of the postseason, outdueling Tyson Chandler in the post and on the glass and grabbing eight offensive rebounds.
George Hill was the Pacers’ other offensive weapon, scoring 17 points and connecting on five three-pointers.
The Pacers host the Knicks in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on TNT.
