Pat Summitt stepped down as coach of the University of Tennessee women’s basketball team, ending a legendary 38-year career eight months after she learned she has early onset dementia.

The winningest college coach of all time – men or women – Summitt will be replaced by Lady Vols associate head coach Holly Warlick.

“I feel really good about my decision,” Summitt said. “I think this is going to be a win-win situation for everybody. Holly and I will work really well together.”

Summitt finalized her plans after a meeting with Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart on Wednesday morning. She was given the title of head coach emeritus.

“We had to give it a name; that’s pretty much what it is,” Summitt said of the new position, which will allow her to be involved with practice and recruiting.

Summitt posted a 1,098-208 record and led Tennessee to eight NCAA championships, second only to UCLA’s John Wooden (10).

The 59-year-old Hall of Famer guided the Lady Vols to 18 Final Fours and 16 SEC regular-season and tournament titles.

“Just like there will never be another John Wooden, there will never be another Pat Summmitt,” Hart said. “I look forward to continuing to work with her in her new role. She is an inspiration to everyone.”

Summitt’s final game was a loss to eventual national champion Baylor in theNCAA Tournament last month.

In August, Summitt announced that she had been diagnosed with early onset dementia. leading to speculation it would be her last season with the program.

Warlick has spent the past 27 seasons as an assistant under Summitt after playing point guard for the Lady Vols.
