Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim made history earlier this week with his 900th career victory. On Saturday, it was another team making history as the Orange had a 52-game regular-season non-conference winning streak snapped.

Temple stunned No. 3 Syracuse with an 83-79 upset win at Madison Square Garden in the first game since Boeheim’s historic night.

Temple found a way to hang on despite not making a field goal over the final 5 1/2 minutes. Syracuse (10-1) never took a lead in the second half even though there were four ties in the back-and-forth battle.

Temple guard Khalif Wyatt paced the Owls with a career-high 33 points, including 15-of-15 shooting from the free-throw line.

“I thought he was brilliant,” Temple coach Fran Dunphy said of Wyatt after the game on ESPN2.

Temple forward Anthony Lee added 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Owls. CJ Fair had a career-high 25 points and 8 rebounds in Syracuse’s losing effort.

Temple was coming off a surprising 72-62 home loss to Canisius on Wednesday and had lost 90-67 to top-ranked Duke earlier in the month.

Boeheim remained at 900 wins, two behind Bob Knight for second place all-time among Division I men’s coaches. Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski has 938 wins.
