No. 1 Oklahoma City Thunder (60-22) vs. No. 5 Memphis Grizzlies (56-26)
Season series: Grizzlies won 2-1.
Points per game (per 100 possessions): Thunder 105.7 (110.2), Grizzlies 93.4 (101.7).
Points allowed per game (per 100 possessions): Thunder 96.5 (99.2), Grizzlies 89.3 (97.4).
Matchups worth watching: Thunder small forward Kevin Durant vs. Grizzlies shooting guard Tony Allen, Thunder power forward Serge Ibaka vs. Grizzlies power forward Zach Randolph.
Scoring leaders: Durant (28.1 ppg), Randolph (15.4 ppg).
Why Oklahoma City will win: The Thunder still have the best player in the series in Durant. Role players like Kevin Martin and Reggie Jackson have come through for Oklahoma City, and if they continue to do so, it might give them enough to sneak into the Western Conference Finals without Russell Westbrook.
Why Memphis will win: Westbrook’s injury has exposed the Thunder’s offense as horrifically inconsistent if Durant isn’t hot, and the Grizzlies’ stellar team defense should take advantage of that. Randolph and Marc Gasol dominated in the first-round series against the Clippers, and Ibaka should be pretty heavily overmatched.
Did you know? The Thunder seriously considered trading up to draft Hasheem Thabeet, the Grizzlies’ no. 2 overall pick in 2009. Thabeet now plays for the Thunder as a backup center after washing out with three other teams, including Memphis.
Prediction: Grizzlies in 6.
