Tim Duncan and Andrea Bargnani are 7-foot power forwards who were drafted first overall.
Duncan is one of the greatest players in NBA history. Bargnani sometimes is OK.
Duncan, the San Antonio Spurs legend, became the ninth player in NBA history to block 2,500 shots Sunday during a 111-106 double-overtime win against Bargnani’s Toronto Raptors. He did so by blocking Bargnani, sending him flying out of bounds with a befuddled look on his face.
Now Duncan did make an errand pass that led to Bargnani’s fast break chance. But superstars make mistakes, too. They then clean up after them.
Duncan, 36, is playing better than he has in five years. He is averaging 19.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 31.4 minutes a game. He had 26 points, five rebounds, three blocks and six assists Sunday.
Bargnani, 27, continues to deal with inconsistency. The 2006 No. 1 draft pick seems to play his best when the Raptors are at their worst and entered Sunday on a hot streak with 81 points in the past three games, all losses.
He’s shooting 29.2% in Raptors wins this season, 40.9% in losses. And though Toronto lost Sunday, it played well in forcing the elite Spurs into double overtime. Therefore, Bargnani had perhaps the worst game of his career, shooting 2-for-19 to finish with four points in 36 minutes.
And he got schooled by a 36-year-old.
