Following perhaps the most successful stretch in school history, the University of Connecticut is evaluating its athletic department.

In 2011, UConn’s football team played in its first BCS bowl, the men’s and women’s basketball team both reached the Final Four and the baseball team advanced to a super regional. However, university president Susan Herbst said in a statement that the school has begun an evaluation process.

Herbst’s statement was in response to a report in The Day of New London that said UConn is looking to but athletic director Jeff Hathaway out of his contract.

Herbst took over the presidency in June. She said the evaluation includes academics and compliance.

Earlier this year, the men’s basketball program lost a scholarship and had coach Jim Calhoun suspended for three games next season as part of an NCAA punishment for recruiting violations. In May, the program lost two more scholarships due to a poor Academic Performance Rating.

Basketball player Jamal Coombs-McDaniel was arrested for marijuana possession before transferring and an on-campus stabbing in 2009 resulted in the death of football player Jasper Howard
