Virginia Commonwealth coach Shaka Smart turned down an offer to become the next coach at Illinois.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Alabama’s Anthony Grant is at the top of the list of several candidates to replace Bruce Weber.

Smart guided Virginia Commonwealth to the Final Four last season and a school-record 29-win campaign this season that ended in a second-round loss to Indiana in the NCAA Tournament.

In a statement released by the school, Smart said he was “looking forward to building on the successes of our program and university.”

Weber was fired after the Illini lost to Iowa 64-61 in the first round of the Big Ten tournament, ensuring the school would miss the NCAAs for the third time in four seasons.
