Warriors Clear Cap Space; Land Iguodala

The Golden State Warriors and free agent forward Andre Iguodala have come to an agreement on a four-year, $48 million contract. The move was made possible thanks to the trade agreement that was made just prior to Iguodala’s commitment in which the Warriors will send the contracts of Richard Jefferson, Brandon Rush, Andris Biedrins and multiple draft picks to the Utah Jazz for Kevin Murphy.
Neither agreement can become official until after the NBA’s moratorium period comes to an end on July 10.
To help facilitate the trade and the signing of Iguodala the Warriors renounced the rights to Carl Landry and Jarrett Jack. The Jazz also renounced the rights to Paul Millsap.

This is the latest major side development to stem from the ongoing saga over All-Star center Dwight Howard’s free agency. The Warriors are one of teams pursuing Howard the hardest. Realizing that their bid to convince the Los Angeles Lakers to sign-and-trade Howard would likely fall on deaf ears if they weren’t willing to give up either Klay Thompson or Harrison Barnes, the Warriors went out and landed Iguodala to give them the flexibility to do so.
As of this report, Howard has yet to announce his intentions or give any team an inclination of which way he is leaning. The Warriors, if Howard commits to them, will be ready to either make an enticing trade offer to the Lakers, who will be much more open to doing a deal if they know that Howard is definitely leaving and could just go to Houston outright if they don’t agree. Even if they found a similar salary shedding deal for Bogut, they’d only have $16 million in space – a few million short of the max. So, they’re back to a sign-and-trade being their only option for Howard unless more than Bogut goes out.
The Jazz were willing to take on the Warriors’ expiring contracts because they came with first-round picks in 2014 and 2017 along with a future second-round pick. This move opens up a world of possibilities for the Jazz. If they hold onto them they can be players in free agency next offseason where there will be stars aplenty, or they can shop them heavily at the deadline to other team’s trying to clear space. Either way, the Jazz are a team to keep an eye on because of their flexibility.
