by Nicole Auerbach and Eric Prisbell, USA TODAY Sports
Selection Sunday for the 2013 NCAA men’s basketball tournament is just 90 days away. USA TODAY Sports college basketball reporters Nicole Auerbach and Eric Prisbell examine the early-season games and developments that could have an impact on who makes the field of 68:
FIVE WINS THAT HELP
Results that will strengthen a team’s case on Selection Sunday:
Colorado 60, Baylor 58, Nov. 16: Colorado gave the Pac-12 its first good win against a major-conference foe in at least a year, taking down Baylor in Charleston. Though the Bears have been up and down, this win will likely hold up as a good, non-conference signature win for the Buffs.
Oklahoma State 76, North Carolina State 56, Nov. 18: N.C. State may not be the ACC frontrunner everyone thought it was heading into the season, but the Wolfpack will be in the top three or four of that conference, so this win will hold up for the Cowboys. Freshman Marcus Smart had 20 points in a coming-out game for him.
Baylor 64, Kentucky 55, Dec. 1: The Bears snapped Kentucky’s 55-game home win streak and picked up their program’s first-ever win over a ranked, non-conference opponent on the road. Kentucky has stumbled through the early part of the season, but beating the ‘Cats still means something.
Illinois 85, Gonzaga 74, Dec. 8: The Illini remained undefeated after beating Gonzaga on the road, continuing an impressive non-conference season that included winning the Maui Invitational. Illinois needed to pile up really good wins because they could be tough to come by during Big Ten play.
Butler 88, Indiana 86, Dec. 15: The Bulldogs are no longer Cinderalla-esque, but not many predicted that they’d hand the top-ranked Hoosiers their first loss of the season. Beating the nation’s No. 1 when you’re unranked certainly looks good on a tournament résumé.
FIVE LOSSES THAT HURT
Results that will weaken a team’s case on Selection Sunday:
Chaminade 86, Texas 73, Nov. 19:The most alarming sign out of this one was that Texas coach Rick Barnes said the score was not indicative of how lopsided the contest was against the Division II Silverswords. Ouch.
